Hansa Festival

The Hansa Festival Of Legends was no doubt one of the biggest events for 2013 so far. The festival attracted people from all over Gauteng and boarding provinces, everyone who is anyone was there: musicians, celebrities, socialites and the general public.

Aside from a few fights that occurred, everyone else had a wonderful time.

The festival had different stages so unfortunately I can only speak of the performances I saw on the main stage.

Zakes Bantwini was great as usual but had to perform in the rain.

The biggest hoo-ha of the night was Zaki Ibrahim who was acting out the late queen of dance Lebo Mathosa. Despite the horrible sound, the crowd did not react well to Ibrahim.

Zaki Ibrahim is the daughter of the popular Jazz maestro Abdullah Ibrahim and a 2013 SAMA nominee, but unfortunately not everyone knows who she is.
She is only popular to a few and judging from the audience’s reaction, the Hansa drinkers clearly wanted Lebo Mathosa herself or someone they knew to play her role.

I was fortunate enough to chat to Zaki Ibrahim 2 days before the festival and I spoke to her about Lebo Mathosa and what she had planned to do on stage. So from where I was in the crowd, she sang well but due to technical problems the sound was not clear. She looked the part and sounded the part but the dancing did not convince me, it lacked the Mathosa energy and sex appeal.

The sound problems continued with Thembi Seete who danced the night away on stage either not realizing her mic was off or she was instructed to carry on singing. Nonetheless we’ll forgive her too cause she looked beautiful.

The performance of the night in my bigheaded opinion went to Kelly Khumalo, she was an amazing Brenda Fassie with her diva-rish tendencies, which made her performances even better. Fortunately by then the sound was fixed and she sounded superb.

Kelly Khumalo was followed by the main act of the night, which was Bongani Fassie collaborating with Brenda Fassie- the hologram. Bongani Fassie gave it his all as expected. We were all very certain he wouldn’t want to disappoint his mother and everyone else who was present at the festival.

The hologram!!!!!!

The hologram was apparently an actress. This actress’ role was prerecorded and played on the night of the festival alongside Bongani. Some people still believed it was a hologram because at the end of the performance, she (hologram) disappeared like she was switched off.

It was still a beautiful moment despite the acting, everyone got slightly emotional.

The DJ’S of the night were also great and the Kwaito performances took us way back. Arthur and Chomee were awesome as usual. The Muffins also did well.

Well-done Hansa!!!!!!
